Mehmet Akif Alkan

Mehmet Akif Alkan is Geophysical Engineer at the Risk Mitigation Group of the Turkish Prime Ministry Disaster & Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). He works in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction in all kind of disasters, namely he follows up the implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR at national level, and the activities of the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR). He is also AFAD focal point on impact of Climate change and adaptation to Climate Change.

Before working at the Risk Mitigation Group he has been the Head of Technological DRR Group for 4 years at the AFAD Planning and Mitigation Department. There he worked for the prevention of human made disasters and accidents, performing all kinds of risk reduction activities in order to reduce the possible damages and impacts of technological disasters (Industrial, mining, transport accidents and critical infrastructures) along with prevenient measures in collaboration with corporations and institutions. Between 2010 – 2012 Mehmet worked at Prioritization of Public Buildings on high seismic risk Provinces, a project funded by the World Bank.

During his career he has also been involved in the drafting of several assessments reports on geophysics, geotechnics and micro-zonation.
